The Black Lake is a large body of water allocated south of Hogwarts. At the beginning of every year, the new first year students travel across the lake in boats. There is an entrance way from the lake into Hogwarts, where the first years are known to wait before they are sorted.

The Lake itself is said to be inhabited by a giant squid, the merpeople, grindylows, and other marine life. Although it is very cold, some students from more northern regions find it's temperature bearable enough to swim in.

In the opposite direction of the Black Lake, behind the East Wing of the castle nestled in the north beside the Forbidden Forest is the Quidditch Pitch. All house Quidditch matches are held here.
