Dear Students,
I'm Professor Night and I am the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher this year. I will spend this year preparing you for any situation that may arise wherein you have to protect yourself against the Dark Arts. Depending on your year, your syllabus will contain a broad area of experience, ranging from defense against unfriendly spells, dark creatures, and dueling against other wizards--both defending yourself and how to retaliate.
My expectations of the class are high, but not without reason. As a student in my years, I personally dreaded this class when it lacked hands-on opportunities, but beware. I will not be bringing in such grand opportunities until you show me that you deserve it with discipline, respect, and academic excellence. I do this not without reason. The dark arts are merciless, and unless you show that you can respect them, defending yourself will not only be a danger to your own self but to your fellow class mates as well.
I understand that this is a core class, and that it is mandatory that you take it until your sixth year; However, I implore you to at least again, show respect in this class. If you cannot behave yourself I will make sure you do not participate and that you will have an essay every night to make up for loss participation.
Classes will be divided by skill, not year. You will be in Class A up until your fourth year, wherein you and I will have a conference to see where you need to be at in order to pass your O.W.L the year after. Class B will contain my most studious students, and Class C is my morning session. You do not have to sign up for Class C, as it is my free period, and only those who desire to study with me personally will have additional lessons. Class C is recommended in addition to Class A students who are on the borderline of failing their O.W.L, as well as students seeking to be Aurors. You may only continue my class if you have an 'A' or better in your fifth year, however, I may make exceptions, but that is only if you write an essay telling me why I should allow you in my class, how it benefits you, and how you will keep yourself from endangering other students. Class B is dangerous, period. My office is open to all students from nine a.m to six p.m. Please, take the opportunity to talk to me if the need ever arises.
I look forward to spending this year with each and every one of you.
--Sincerely, Professor Night
