Winter was not Onyx's favorite season. In fact, he greeted it with a whole new hatred each year. Each winter, he was supposed to watch his activity and take extra caution when being outdoors. However, as careful as he was over Christmas break while at home with Ruby and Sapphire, at school he could not be careful enough. The instant he had set eyes upon Ashlyn in the common room after the weeks away from her...
Living hell.
It was as if a beast ripped through him and its sole desire was to have her. Getting her out of view of her brother was easy enough with him chasing the Hufflepuff girl, and the placement of his lips upon the succulent curve of her neck was the last thing he remembered. He remembered slipping his fingers into her hair and kissing her so hungrily that he might bite her, but then the sting started. A searing pain through his torso that caused him to utter apologies and sprint up to the boys dormitory, grabbing the thin wrist of his sister on the way, hissing that it was happening again.
A few days passed in the closed curtains around his bed, without word to Ashlyn. He didn't want to avoid her, Merlin knows how much he didn't want that, but he needn't worry her about this. The color was fading from his face and a thin droplet of blood was trickling from the corner of his mouth. "Listen...Ruby..." He spoke low, in between ragged breaths, looking up at her through icy blue eyes. "It's not as bad as last time. But, maybe it's time to go see Madame Pomfrey." He was always kinder, softer in his sickness, reaching up to trace the pad of his thumb over the softness of her cheek. "I'll be fine. Just need to let it run its course again, okay? We made it through this once. We can do it again. We're Hollands." A tired smile passed from him and he let her help him to his feet and guide him through the Common Room once it was devoid of people. He staggered without any real depth perception, wheezing deeply to try to slow the manic pounding of his heart.
The nurse in the hospital wing immediately tried magical means to heal him and found herself befuddled when it didn't work. He looked up at her with a soft sheen of sweat over his face and said, "Listen, I'll be fine. I got sick once like this after being poisoned in Knockturn Alley...but I haven't felt the same since then. I always get weak and manic in the winter months. Cold air aggravates it. I just...need sleep." After hours of arguing, he finally got to shut his eyes.
In the middle of the night, he called out her name. Half of his brain was still coherent to the point that he hadn't gotten to give her the Christmas present he got for her. On his finger, he peered through a bleary eye at the ring she'd given him. It was strange that in his weakness and illness, he could freely feel what he wanted to. Quietly, he swallowed and looked up at Ruby with a small sigh in effort to not breathe quickly and make the racing in his heart flare up again. "Please, go get her. I know you only want family here, but I want her here. I'm well enough to handle seeing her."
Grudgingly, she went off and finally told Ashlyn where her brother had disappeared to and told her that he wanted to see her in the Hospital Wing, but to watch for any signs of him being in pain worse than he already was. He sat up in the hospital bed and scowled softly, this illness was ridiculous and it was irking him to be still and idle when he wanted so badly to stay with her, just one night.
