Sapphire loved Christmas, loved being home despite having to constantly avoid Ruby's presence. She'd become fairly skilled at it over the years. For the moment, she had settled on a window ledge large enough to accommodate her on one of the upper floors. Ruby and their mother were out Christmas shopping, her father had been in his study for most of the morning, presumably answering correspondence from his various contacts, and Onyx...well, Merlin only knew what he was doing. For herself, she'd gotten up early, gone for a run, and then changed into an over-sized blue cashmere sweater and dark leggings. Even on a casual day, her mother insisted they all look their best. They were Hollands, after all, and had images to maintain. Nevermind that there was no one to see them at present. She curled up, propping the rather sizable book entitled: Ailments and Antidoes on her knees.
She'd been searching every day for the cure that would rid Onyx of the poison in is system for good. Though the healers had said he was 'out of the woods', they'd also said he'd battle the symptoms for the rest of his life unless a cure was found. Sapphire still intended to find it, her atonement to him for being too young to face what was happening when the poison had almost taken him. The sound of footsteps didn't register until they'd neared her hiding spot. She glanced up, wondering if he'd appeared in response to her thoughts. She debated returning her attention to her book and letting him pass, it was always easier that way. Reaching out always got...mixed responses. It would be Christmas in a few days, and she'd bought presents for everyone, even Ruby. She was truly excited for Onyx to see his gift, she'd searched for it for ages before finally finding one that pleased her.
Marking her place, she looked up just as he reached her. Unable to think of anything witty that wouldn't sound sarcastic to him, she settled on "Morning Onyx, father said he needed to speak with you about something when he finishes in his study." It was true enough, but she wished she had something more personal to say. Experience had taught her, however, that personal was dangerous territory for them now. He hadn't forgiven her yet, at this rate, she didn't know if he ever would.
