Funny how words can have such a hold on how we feel. Three little words from Xayden were enough to begin his world anew and breathe life into the shell that he’d been living in. Every time he heard those words, he felt more joy and love than he ever thought possible in his entire life. Ayden didn’t even have to speak for him to feel such love. In his smile, the way he ruffled his hair, even in the wonderful press of his kiss, there was more love than he had ever hoped to feel in his entire lifetime.
But now, he sat in in the far corner of the empty Astronomy tower with trembling hands and a quivering jaw as numbness came over his body. His heart didn’t even seem to beat. It felt as if shock and horror had fallen in love and it was taking over him. Inside both trembling hands was a letter from his grandparents in Kamakura, written in such beautiful calligraphy that one would never know it would come bearing such harrowing news. Never in his life had he expected such a letter from them, but now it was here. His own fate.
Dearest Aito,
Honored grandson, during Christmas holidays, you were informed of the dire situation of your family. The Japanese ministry has been without a Satoshi for 17 years now, where we have always been within the ministry, working alongside our country to the best of our abilities to ensure that our magical prowess does not diminish through the years. This absence of a Satoshi family member has put us in an awkward position, Aito. Ren, Takumi, and your mother all have shamed the family for abandoning their duty to the ministry. The minister is asking us to prove our loyalty.
We have, in our journeys, learned of a well-known wizarding family within Asia who is willing to bind their family and renown with ours. When you turned 17, honored grandson, you became a man in the eyes of the wizarding community. So, we look to you to bring our honor back and help us to maintain the titles that the minister threatens to throw away for your mother and uncles’ insolence. That being said, Aito, we have made a binding contractual arrangement with the elders of this pureblood family to bond into ours. Meaning you will be expected to marry into their family.
This is a most desperate plea we send to you, honored grandson. We risk losing everything we have worked centuries to achieve for nearly two decades of slander!
This is a most heavy burden to place upon your young shoulders, but we know that you will honor your family and do what is necessary to keep our good name without tarnish and our reputation as upstanding citizens and magical leaders whole. Your family counts on you, your ancestors count on you, and your family to come will be counting on you to do the right and honorable thing, Aito Satoshi.
Your Honored Grandparents.
In a moment, his heart jumped into his throat as trembling hands shredded the paper into pieces. Tears blurred his vision for a long moment before a loud cry and sheer anguish echoed across the stone. No! No, no, no!! They were asking far too much of him! He couldn’t just be signed up to marry someone he didn’t even know! Not when his heart belonged to Xayden! How was he going to ever be able to tell him this news? This would surely break his heart as it was breaking his. And that was something he swore he’d never do to him. Ever.
His fist swung back and connected harshly to the stone of the Astronomy tower as he screamed as loud as his voice would permit. Tears streamed down his face as his whole world fell apart. “The HONORABLE THING?!?!?! This isn’t HONOR!! This is PRIDE!!!” He bellowed, slamming his fist again into the wall. Blood gushed from the broken knuckles as the weight of responsibility and grief crushed his soul into a black abyss. The tall body slumped until it crumpled onto the floor and shook with heartbroken sobs. He was going to lose his whole world…his breath…his sunlight and moonlight…his stars and flowers…his beloved…his Xayden…because his family didn’t want to lose their place in high society.
He would have given up anything else, just not his Xayden.
Not those smiles, not his laughs, not his hand in his, or fingers entwined with his, not looking into those beautiful eyes. No. He wouldn’t! Damn them!! Why couldn’t they sign someone else up for this garbage? Didn't Takumi have a daughter or something to marry off like some little prize to be won?
The footnote described that he was to prepare to ask his contractual fiancée to marry him when he returned home to Japan at the end of the school year. He would have a week between coming home and asking this person to marry him before he would be expected to simply begin life with them. What if the person hated him? What if it was a girl?! He couldn’t handle that on top of losing his Aisuru. He wailed in absolute agony, covering his face with both bloodied hands with broken knuckles.
“Not my Xayden…I can’t give him up…not my love…” He sobbed to the unyielding stone floor. “I’ll never love anyone like I love him.” He sniffed, shivering with the weight of his sorrow. All he wanted was to wake up from this horrible nightmare and still be next to his beautiful Xay, but he wasn’t waking. The pain of his knuckles was not waking him. It was no dream. It was a living, breathing nightmare.
He was losing his beloved angel.
