Kaoru Takashi.
The sweet young man that had befriended both him and his sister the very second that they had ran into each other on the Hogwarts Express during their first year. The boy had been entirely kind, easily ignoring the piercing stares and scathing comments that were directed to Artemis and his sister. He ignored all of the other invites that were given to him by other students that were hoping to get the young japanese boy to sit with them. Stating that he would rather sit with them because he thought that they could really use a nice person to be a good friend.
The years had passed and soon Kaoru had become more than a friend. He was Artemis' best friend and he had managed to somehow claim the heart of his sister, making her fall in love with him and becoming her first boyfriend. They had been in love, he had been able to see that in the way that both he and she had looked at one another. Kaoru had even spoken to Artemis about giving her a promise ring. He wanted to promise himself to his sister until he they were old enough to be properly engaged, to be properly married. He knew that his sister wouldn't have rejected them and they would have been happy together.
Unfortunately, fate had other plans for the two of them. Kaoru had been getting sicker and sicker recently and while they had previously held hopes of him getting better, those hopes had immediately been crushed when he and his family had gotten a call from his sister.
Kaoru was dead.
He had died at six that morning, just moments before she had made the call. He had died in her arms thanking her for everything that she had done for him along with apologizing for everything that they had not had the chance to do together. He had apologized for the fact that they would never have the chance to get married. He apologized for wasting her time, for making her fall in love with him only to have him leave her in the end. He had apologized for leaving her with a broken heart and with his last strength he gave her a final kiss before dying with a peaceful smile on his face.
He had died content, in the arms of the only woman that he had ever had the chance to love.
Artemis had lost his best friend, he had mourned and wept along with everyone else that had been at the funeral. Yet he had also lost much more than just that. As he held his sister's frame close to his, crying and sobbing into her black dress at the funeral it was obvious that he was beginning to lose so much more than just a friend.
He was losing his sister as well. He could tell with just one tear filled glance that his sister had no wish to continue on in the world without Kaoru. He had been the one that she had given her trust, her heart to. He had been her very reason for living, for breathing in the air. Without him, the world seemed to have lost all meaning to her. He could see it in her cold stare, he could see it on her emotionless face.
He could tell that she wanted to die.
Perhaps that was the thing that destroyed him even more, that was the thing that made him revert back to his childhood dependency on her. She would no longer sleep in her bed alone, Artemis would always be there holding her to his chest the way that Kaoru had done before in an attempt to comfort her. She was no longer left alone, Artemis following her everywhere at school and at home to make sure that there would be no attempts on her part to end her own life.
He became relient on her, dependent on her because he was determined to give her life purpose again. She would never end her life if she believed that Artemis needed her. That was what he knew for sure. He would let the world think him weak. He would let them call him names and bully him. If it kept his sister alive and gave her a purpose again then he did not care. For Luna. For his nee nee who wordlessly gave up her childhood, who would willingly give up her life if it was needed in order to protect him, he would gladly give up absolutely anything and if this would save her and bring her back from the darkness that she was trapped in, then so be it.
For her, he would endure all the pain in the world if it meant that he could see that smile again. He would do anything to hear her laugh, and see that warmth in her blue eyes as she found love again. Until that day happened, he would do every and any thing for her.
He would protect her until she did not need him to do so anymore. Even if she needed him to be with her for the rest of his life, then he would happily be by her side without complaint. He would always be there for her no matter what.
Always.
