If he tried hard enough, he could remember the day that his precious little sister was born. He had been rather young then, if he was not mistaken. He could remember waiting for the longest time inside the waiting room with his father as the mediwitches, healers and midwives were in the hospital room, helping his mother deliver the newest addition to their small little family. It seemed like it had been hours before one of the main healers came into the waiting room and gave them permission for the two of them to go and see both his mother and the new baby. He could remember his father scooping him up in his arms before he ran off to the room that they lay in, could remember the disapproving looks and the scolding tones that the medical staff had called out to his father with as they hurried down the hall, but there was something that he could remember more than all of that put together.
He could recall, the best out of everything, the first time that he laid eyes on what was his beautiful new baby sister.
She was such a beautiful and delicate little thing, with a head filled with short and fuzzy black hair. Her skin was a light sun kissed color, gifted to her by the genetics that were passed down by their parents and she had a small, perfect little nose and a cute little mouth and yet the thing that captivated him the most was none of that. The thing that he would love the best would be when those little eyes of hers opened, revealing those beautiful and vivid pools of oceanic blue. The moment that their eyes met, he became determined to be the best older brother that he could possibly be.
She already had him wrapped around her tiny little finger without even having to try.
He was told that her name was Aqua and now that he was an older brother, he would be expected to look out for the new child and protect her to the best of his ability, something that he was all too happy to try and do. As they grew older, their relationship grew stronger and stronger despite the age difference between the two of them. Aqua was a kind and gentle young girl who seemed as though she could charm even the coldest of hearts with that sweet smile and those pretty eyes. Not only that, but she was also wickedly clever, easily the smartest one in comparison to him and Terra.
Ah yes. Terra.
He was the youngest child out of the three of them, the baby of the family that was born a year after Aqua had been born and yet him and Ventus were not nearly as close as he and Aqua were. Terra was a very quiet and serious child who had seemed to like Ventus the least out of everyone in the family while he was growing up. He too, was very fond of their sister though that fondness was often overlooked whenever he was nearby and Aqua wanted Ventus to join in whatever game that he and her were already playing at the time.
Terra was a serious and studious young man who grew frustrated with his own inability to surpass his siblings and stand out on his own. Ventus had been the one to excell in both athletics and school. His sister received perfect marks on nearly every single assignment that she completed during her time in school and had managed to become a favorite of the professors during her stay. Terra had claimed later on in life that he had often found himself completely covered by the shadow that was left by both of his siblings and that he had found himself nearly drowning in the expectations that he was supposed to live up to.
It was probably because of that, Ventus would reason later on in their adulthood as he thought back to the times when he, Aqua and Terra were growing up, that Terra was the one who had been the easiest to trick into believing their mother's nonsense about blood purity and the superiority of pureblooded wizards and witches while he and Aqua had not. They had both had other things that made them feel important, they were both successful and did not need to cling onto their mother's words of nonsense in order to tell them so.
Their brother was not the same. He had needed something to make him feel important, to make him feel superior. Merlin, he wished that he could have been closer to his brother more than anything, perhaps then he could've made him turn out to be a different sort of person.
Damn it. Damn it all.
