He had seen her for the first time since she had been nothing more than a loving toddler, one whose smile had once had the ability to light up his entire world. Oh how much she had changed in that time that they had been apart. Those eyes, those beautiful blue eyes that had once been the exact reflection of Daphne's had grown so weary, so cold. That face which had once been so soft and kind had grown hard and cold with the pain of heartache, but perhaps the thing that had hurt him worst was the fact that the smile, that beautiful smile was gone, dead with the passing of the seemingly cruel time. He had seen it in that photograph he had been shown by Ren Satoshi, but he had not wanted to believe it and had come to see for himself, staying at the inn at Hogsmeade until he had accidentally stumbled across his niece shopping on this particular weekend.
He had seen her and had found that the emotions he had tried so hard to cover were taking over and had quickly ducked into a small alleyway, protecting himself from the view of others as the tears he had tried so heart to fight began to break free.
He had failed both as her relative and as her godfather. How dissapointed, how angry Daphne and Roderich must be with him as they watched their daughter experience whatever pain that she had, over and over again until she had turned into that cold shell of the girl that she once was, a mere shadow of her former self. She had turned into that because of his failure to protect her and her brother and that very realization was more painful to him than any sort of physical pain that had been inflicted on him during his time as an auror.
His breath came out in short and shallow pants as the pressure of the pain that he felt began to overwhelm him, cutting him deep inside of his chest and grasping at his heart in a hold that he knew he would never be able to escape from. The large and strong form of the Hungarian slumped against the cold, hard material of the building that he was using as refuge from the stares he knew that he would be given, a quiet whisper, a quiet wish and prayer to the angry souls of Daphne and Roderich to forgive him as the tears began to fall at an even more rapid pace, multiple amounts of the small and salty drops falling onto the cement and staining it, secretly knowing that there would be no mercy left in their hearts for him. He would suffer from this pain for the rest of his life, something that he would be willing to accept later on in life.
He would suffer through anything, as long as it meant that the two who he loved more than anything else would one day forgive him. Until then, he would just suffer in silence as one of the pained, one of the loveless.
