"You. Ever. Loving. Jerk!"
Each word was accented with a well placed smack to the back of his brother's thick skull. Takumi, at first, looked throughly confused. He'd just entered Hogsmeade to find his twin standing there with his arms folded tightly over his chest and his black eyes locked on him with an edge of anger. Now, this? What did he do this time?
"Veritas serum?? Seriously? Trying to ruin me?!"
Oh. That.
"Ruin you? Why? Did you have company?" Takumi raised his hands to block the next smack hurtling at his head as Ren drew in a sharp breath.
"Yes! The person I didn't want to scare off, and the instant that bloody stuff made me start spewing my guts...he looked like he was having a heart attack and bolted!"
The next sound made Ren fume. Takumi was nearly roaring in laughter, and finally unable to block the furious whack to the back of his head. "Ouch! Will you relax? Bloody Merlin. Have you taken your medication today?"
Ren huffed bitterly, "Yes. Did you lace that too?"
"No, but piss me off, Ren. That sounds like a great idea." Ren drew back again and Takumi straightened, straightening his hair, which fell long today, like his brother's. Standing one in front of the other, so many people stopped and stared. It was as if they were were mirror reflections of each other, save Ren's annoyed and frustrated face and Takumi's neutral gaze, bordering on amusement.
The twins fell into step with each other, Ren's mood easing from frustrated to concerned. "Do you think I really upset him that badly?" "It depends on how he reacts to surprise. From what you've told me, you've done a good job masking your emotions and were trying to convince yourself down from them, correct?" Ren scuffed at the ground with his shoe softly. "I just...didn't want to get hurt again. You know how hard I fall." "I know."
They passed the sweet shop and the tea shop in quiet contemplation before Ren faltered, looking at a display of roses in front of the tea house. A sort of far off smile started to curl over his lips when he looked at one with blue petals. "It's already bad, isn't it?" He'd not noticed Ren had stopped walking until he turned his head nearly half a block away and looked back before coming back to his side. "Do you want one? I'll get you one." Ren was thinking about that smile again, that one full smile. Maybe a rose would help make him feel better. He could always take one to him in an apology for making him panic.
"Not for me, I want to get one for Tanaka. And one for Sebastian." He bought a red rose with a long stem for his daughter, and a blue one for Sebastian, handing over a few galleons to the stall owner. "Hey! What about me? I thought I was your favorite brother!"
Ren looked at him and squinted slightly, "Who laced my tea with Veritas serum and caused a big issue!" Takumi laughed and took the red rose he thrust at him bitterly, paying the lady again. The lady was holding in laughter, her frame shaking slightly as the twins set off again.
"I'm sorry. I hope I didn't ruin your chances." Takumi wasn't teasing this time. He was being remorseful, looking at his older twin through the curtain of long hair. Ren mirrored his look to look back at him. "I know. I'll go by St. Mungo's later and see if he's still there. Can you take this to Tanaka?" The other rose was given, gentler this time, and Takumi kept it safe. "Of course, she'll be upset that she missed you."
Curse that fourth year rule.
They turned and stopped again, gazing in the window of a shop as Takumi spoke to a couple of students passing behind them. "Good afternoon, Miss Walsh, Mister Demetriou." Ren looked behind him and smiled slightly at the sight of the young couple. Wait a second. Wasn't that the brother of the girl Aito went to the Yule Ball with? He looked far different than he did in the image, stronger, healthy, deeply happy. The girl too. The way they looked at each other pulled a bit on his heart strings. That was a powerful gaze.
That was a deep gaze.
He returned his gaze back to the shop window, admiring the covers of the books within the display as the girl told Takumi she would be at the classroom early in the morning for her lessons and the couple excused themselves, going off hand in hand to the tea shop.
"Kind of gives you faith in humanity to see love like that, doesn't it?"
Ren smiled, "Yes. It does."
