It was a brisk fall day. The leaves were changing colors and falling from the trees around the manor and there was a familiar chill in the air that said winter was coming. Meggera's favorite time of the year. Winter meant snow. Snow meant snowmen, forts, and snowball fights with her big brother. She couldn't wait for those first flakes to start falling! She stood on her tip toes to stare out the window anxiously, wishing the snow would hurry up and get here.
“Meggera, dear, let mommy finish your hair.” called her mothers voice from across the room.
Meggera pouted and turned from the window reluctantly, before running back over to her mothers chair, her curls bouncing. She was the spitting image of a porcelain doll. Pale white skin, pink rosy cheeks, wide blue eyes, and black hair that fell in ringlets just past her shoulders. She was shorter then other girls her age, but her mother expected a growth spurt any day now. She had just turned 8 after all, perfect time for growing as her mother had said.
“Now, how would you like it today love? Our guests will be here any minute.” her mother said, smiling down at her with the same blue eyes and black hair. Meggera was the spitting image of her mother in every way.
“I don't like them mommy....they always pull my hair. Can't I stay in my room instead?” Meggera whined, sitting on the stool in front of her mothers chair.
“No dear, you're a lady. Ladies don't hid in their rooms when guests come by.” her mother said, shaking her head with a small smile, “How about a braid? They can't pull it if its tied back.”
Meggera nodded, still pouting as her mother gently braided her hair. She didn't like these visits. Mrs Beaurchists boys were always so mean to her and Alex. She didn't understand why they had to play together at all anyways. Gramps said they were no good anyways. But she didn't have time to brood over it because her mother had finished with her hair and their door bell was ringing. Meggera's mother stood and brushed the front of her pretty blue dress smooth, with Meggera copying her every move before the two of them made their way down to the sitting room, her brother Alex joining them at the stairs. He looked just about as thrilled with this visit as Meggera felt.
It was times like these that Meggera envied her little brother James. He was just a baby so he got to stay up in the nursery with a nanny during these visits. Maybe she could sneak away and go play with him instead...The three of them entered the sitting room to find Mrs Beaurchist and her 4 boys waiting for them. The two women embraced and started conversing in rapid french and giggling, leaving the children just standing there staring at each other in an uncomfortable silence.
The second youngest of the boys made the first move. He ran over and tapped Alex on the should, saying “Tag!” and they were all off, running about the first floor of the house, none of them wanting to be tagged back. Meggera didn't like this game. She couldn't run as fast as the boys so they always caught her. Nathaniel made a habit of pulling her hair when he tagged her, so she hid under the dining room table until the boys had all dispersed. She peeked out from under the table, making sure it was safe, before dashing upstairs towards the nursery.
She only just made it inside the room when she heard the yells and squeals of the boys coming up the stairs. She went and sat next to her little brothers crib, her legs swinging back and forth, just a tad to short to reach the floor just yet. She had to have been sitting there for a good 15 minutes before the nurse came back in. She knew she'd be in trouble if her mother found out she had been hiding instead of being a good hostess, so she told the nurse they were playing hide and seek and this was her hiding spot. She then carefully made her way out of the nursery and up to the 4th floor where her room was. Surely the boys wouldn't come all the way up here...or so she thought.
There the 5 of them were, fighting as usual. Alex and Nathaniel were trying to punch each other while the other 3 brothers kept their distance. Meggera ran over, yelling at them to stop.
“Stop it! Stop it or I'm telling mommy!” she said, stamping her foot on the floor. She hated it when they fought like this. Last time Alex had ended up with a black eye.
“Oh, you'll tell mommy? How old are you, five Tepes? Run and tell them, little snitch.” said Nathaniel in a nasty tone as he and Alex broke apart for a minute.
“I just...I mean...” Meggera stuttered, wringing her hands, “I'm not a...”
“Filthy half breeds. Typical they'd be snitches too! Dad was right about the lot of you.” said Nathaniel with a sneer.
“Take that back!” Alex yelled, his fists clenching.
“Or what?! You'll tell on me like your sister?” said Nathaniel, laughing until Alex's fist smacked right into his nose and they were off again, rolling around on the floor.
“No! Stop it stop it stop it!! Nanny!!” Meggera yelled, hoping their nanny would hear her while tugging on the back of Nathaniels shirt, trying to pull the two boys apart.
She may be small, but somehow she managed to pull the taller boy back towards the window seat of the hallway. She yanked and tugged until she could feel the back of her legs touch the edge of the seat, holding as tightly as she could as Nathaniel pulled forward, yelling at her to quit interfering and calling her every bad name he seemed to know. But she had good leverage where she was, so she leaned back slightly, holding him back while one of his brothers held Alex back as well.
It didn't last though. Nathaniel managed to twist and break her grip on his shirt before turning and shoving her back, much harder then had probably been intended because the next thing Meggera knew she heard breaking glass. She screamed as she felt it cut into her back, then felt the air go frigid. She felt like she was flying, but she wasn't. She could see the sky, but before she could process what was happening she hit the ground with a sickening thud. The pain was instant and the worst she had ever felt. She couldn't breath. She couldn't move. The sky was spinning and she could hear distant screaming, but it seemed so far away. Things were getting fuzzy, why was it getting dark so fast?
----------------------------------------
The next thing she knew she was laying in a bed of some sort. Her eyes remained closed, but she could hear beeping noises and voices. Someone was crying nearby and there were other voices whispering. It was warm, much warmer then she remembered, and her head hurt really bad. Her fingers twitched slightly and she whimpered, trying to open her eyes but the light hurt her eyes. Instantly there was a hand on her forehead stroking her hair and she recognized the soothing voice of her mother telling her to stay still and that everything was ok now.
She managed to open her eyes to see her mother sitting by her bed, eyes red from crying, her brother Alex sitting by her feet, and her father and grandfather standing a few feet away, looking grimly down at her.
“I told you those boys were bad seeds Analise. They could have killed her.” her gramps said, shaking his head.
Her mother just shook her head and kept stroking Meggera's head, biting her lip.
“Father, stop. It's not her fault. Elizabeth is her friend, its not her fault their father has turned them into hateful little monsters.” she heard her father respond bitterly.
“Don't say that...they're just children.” her mother said softly.
“Children, yes. Children that nearly killed you're only daughter!”
Meggera winced at her grandfathers tone. What had happened? She couldn't remember. She remembered trying to hide from the boys....then nothing but cold. She looked up at her mother confused. Where was she? Why did it hurt so much? Why were gramps and papa so angry?
“Where...where am I?” she asked, her small voice cracking as frightened tears slid down her cheeks.
She was immediately wrapped in her mothers embrace.
“You're at the hospital sweetie. You're ok, don't cry.” her mother coo'd soothingly.
“H-How did I get h-here..?” she asked, sniffling, looking to her father and grandfather.
“You don't remember sweetie?” her mother asked.
Meggera shook her head, she couldn't remember anything. All she knew was that her whole body hurt, especially her head. She tried to reach up to wipe her tears away, but found her arms were both in casts. She couldn't move at all except her neck and head. More frightened tears slid down her face.
“That boy, Nathaniel, pushed you out the window.” her grandfather said bluntly, “Luckily, we are what we are and you lived. Any normal human child would've died instantly.”
“H-He...pushed me? W...Why would he do that..?” Meggera tried to say, but it was getting hard to speak.
“Because, my dear. They're bad, nasty, children who would like nothing more then to see you and this whole family wiped off the face of the-”
She couldn't hear the last part because her mother had covered her ears with her hands. Now her mother looked angry too and was saying something she couldn't hear to gramps, who said something then promptly turned and left. Meggera was about to ask what was going on but her mother shushed her.
“Don't worry about it love. Gramps is just upset that you got hurt. You just rest and everything will be fine.” she said, just as a nurse came in to check on Meggera.
The nurse seemed nice enough. Meggera had always liked them, but this one made her drink a bad tasting potion that made her cough. Whatever it was though made her eyes feel heavy and before she knew it she had drifted off into the deepest sleep she had ever had.
