AR Class B::Tuesday::Class One

It was the last period of the day beyond those who signed up for Astronomy and would later meet up at the top of the Astronomy tower. The afternoon sun had warmed the castle stone and moistened the air heavily as if one were trudging through waters with every step. This didn't exactly apply to the Ancient Runes classroom however, despite the fact that it resides on the fifth floor of Ravenclaw Tower.

The first thing one would find upon walking into the classroom is a gust of cool wind peeling out of the opening doors to greet whoever is entering. The music of a chime softly touches the air as the doors swing, the low light that is shown wavers only slightly from the many candles that scattered about the room on any surface available. Candles were needed for large, heavy, black, velvet curtains were pulled over the large windows, blocking out the blazing afternoon sun.

The stone walls were adorn with pictures of Norse gods and runic literature. Old Anglo-Saxon kings peered down from their places on the walls at the patrons of the room, remembering faces. The tables were pushed back along the far wall, wooden chairs stacked neatly at their sides to make room for the display of deep, red velvet cushions scattered before a larger royal purple cushion near the center of the room.

Odd furniture that looked to belong to any eastern and northern European country decorated the room space, reminding one of the odd pieces that adorn Miss Ivy's hair. Some of these items held magical properties while most were just for aesthetic and decorative purposes.

Before each of the red cushions sat a small brown pouch. Inside were 33 individual runes made of oak wood and each one bore a mark of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. Inside each pouch was also a small piece of parchment that read:

With these runes, arrange them to spell your name. Then, you must find one other person, a partner, and arrange your runes to spell their name. Only the first name. You must be paired with your partner's name before class begins.

If one were to peer over to the purple cushion, they would see 6 runes laid out before it:

In the boy's bathroom, Vincent stood looking in the mirror as he carefully used his right hand to draw another line. Stepping back he moved himself around till it was clear that his face would fit the space easily enough to make the face he had been angling for. He had already done the mustache, but the monocle string seemed odd to him. He needed the humor before his next class, one in which he barely squeaked by in.

Rune magic, he didn't mind so much as to him runes could be quite useful when it came to sealing off doors and growing plants. There were loads of runes which had real power, but he found studying them to be dull and lifeless. Still, he tried. Done with his 'art' and it getting close to class time, Vincent sighed and picked up his bag and exited, heading out to his class. since the boy's bathroom wasn't that far from class, he was there in about two minutes in time to groan. Clearly he had managed yet again to be early. Or at least earlier then others who were clearly avoiding the class as well as long as possible.

Picking a cushion he went over and frowned at the instructions.

Sitting down in a position which always drove his mother crazy to see, something he had developed just because of this teacher. Picking up the bag, he flipped open his book to the appropriate page for this particular runic alphabet and began searching through the bag to pull out the ones he needed. It took a minute to find them all (he hated the fact there really was no "V" which he took as a personal affront to him) and lay them on the floor, dropping the bag on his bag lying beside the cushion now. Moving them around till he had it spelled correctly, he then turned them all around facing the purple cushion so the Professor could see his work.



Sticking his tongue out in irritation, he flipped open his book to where he had last been reading and started in on reading up on the growth rune and it's effects on different types of plants in different environments.

[Samantha Walters]

Samantha had an early start to the day when to woke up to one of her room mates crying about some sort of mail she’d gotten. She had been up all day without break due to the stuffing of classes in her schedule. The last class of the day for her was Ancient Runes one of her more favorite classes, it was interesting. The class was always something that she was interested in but she didn’t end up taking it until she was a bit older due to her schedule usually being so packed. Samantha liked to have the max amount of classes available as it gave her something to do besides her Head Girl duties, something she was also very proud to have although it could get boring.

The small girl made her way towards the Ancient Runes classroom only to be stopped by some students who looked like they were attempting to do a prank. Samantha stopped in front of them with her hands on her hips, ”Excuse me, but what are you doing?” She questioned and they all spun around to look at her with faces clearly guilty, ”Nothing! Nothing!!” They squealed before running off. Samantha shook her head and made sure there was no damage near by before she again started on her way to class. She found herself in the hallway in no time clearly she had been thinking the whole way there.

”Mmm” She murmured with a chuckle before moving into the hallway completely. When a small group passed by her she looked after them quickly before turning back. She stopped while in front of the door and shifted her bag before entering, when she arrived she looked around lazily to find that only one student beat her. She noticed the classroom was filled with pillows, soft places to sit on the floor. She smiled and headed to a mid area seat, she plopped down and looked for the directions for class. She looked around only to notice the one student in front of her was one that she now recognized. His name was Vincent, and he was in almost all of her classes that were combined by years. He was a nice kid to her atleast but maybe that was just because she was head girl, he was a slytherin... but then all Slytherins weren't bad, Vicente was sweet to her.

”Hello.” She spoke to Vincent that sat near her in the class before going about her business in the class, it was definitely going to be an interesting lesson. She emptied her pouch to spell out her name just as the words advised, she actually knew the runes too so this was semi-easy for her. She looked into the ruins and picked out ones she thought were right, she was pretty sure so she’d give it a try.



When she finished she neatly arranged them in a way so that the Professor could look at what she managed to create. Then she looked around again this time allowing her eyes to settle on Vincent, "Hey, do you wanna be partners?" She uttered while pulling her legs up to her chest and leaning on her knees.

He was just reading about the fact the minor growing rune didn't do well with the longer term plants when he heard someone else enter. Looking up he spotted the Head Girl Sam enter and give him a smile saying hello. Vin nodded back and waved, seeing she choose a cushion near him, probably because she had seen him in another class. In a way it was kind of odd, knowing one of your classmates was several years ahead yet you were both working on the same things.

Only Hogwarts did weird stuff like that.

He was musing on this very fact when she started pulling her own runes out, though much faster then he had and clearly with more comprehension. Probably after several years repetition he'd be better at it as well, but who really knew what would happen over time? All Vin knew was that right now he was more interested in practical learning then written stuff. Maybe he had rune on the brain when he was in here. She spoke to him asking if he wanted to be partners and he looked up, startled.

"Ah, sure! Though I think you have an advantage. You've been doing this longer then me. Reading these things make my eyes go watery after awhile." Glancing over at her name, he pulled out more runes and spelled hers underneath his and then turned it for the teacher as well. he then double checked his name in front of her and leaned back so she could see his. "Kind of both good and bad to have the Head Girl checking over my classwork, does it feel weird to have a fifth year checking your spelling?" he joked softly.

Going across the floor, Muk felt glad indeed that his two classes one right after the other were for once not far apart levels wise. In a few months it wouldn't make a big difference, but right now his legs felt like rubber at the thought of the trip back downstairs later on, horrid thing. As he entered his first ever rune class though his eyes opened up in shock. The room was one of the plain weirdest rooms he had ever seen. He walked in, seeing two students already working out the runes and sitting next to each other, but he walked around a little looking at the oddest furniture ever. The room was a cross between odd westerners stuff and a tent, with the pillows laid out just like the Marabout's house on the far side of his town.

Bizarre!

Finally picking out a cushion on the other side of the room, he looked at the instructions, opened to his book up to the chart of those he had seen in his book, and set out to find the runes, sitting in what looked like a half-kneel, half sitting position (the kind which made most adults wince) with his butt resting on the inside of his feet. He had to look at the rune table several times for each odd stick pattern, but he eventually managed to get the word out in front of him. He checked it twice, before he thought he really had it set out right.



Mukhtar didn't think of turning them for the teacher to see and he was too far away to see the other two's spellings. A tentative wave in their direction as he made eye contact, just t say welcome and he sat there wondering who he would get as a partner. And how he would survive a class which appeared largely complex... Reaching for his bag, he pulled out a piece of parchment, his quill, and his ink and wrote down the runes in his name for future reference. In addition just in case, he wrote out his last name to using the book and then the alternative name the school had him listed as.

[Victoria Alden]

Victoria sighed, pushing her wet hair out of her face. She’d taken advantage of her free period, soaking in the pool-like tub in the prefect’s bathroom until her fingers and toes were wrinkled like prunes, and the thick calluses that covered her feel were soft. It was one of the many perks that came along with Auriel being a prefect. It was risky, especially since that year’s head girl harbored a special dislike for Victoria and everything she did…or didn’t stand for. Even with the elevated risk Victoria still participated in her new cleansing ritual, it calmed her, helped her clear her mind of all the painful thoughts that assaulted her mind throughout the day.

She pulled herself out of the tub, ignoring Moaning Myrtle who was wailing in one of the stalls. Using one hand she twisted her hair up into a large bun on top of her head, tucking in the end so it would stay put. She grabbed a fluffy white towel and cat down on one of the cushions that furnished the room and dried herself off before dressing. She put on her shorts and shirt, tying it up instead of buttoning it. She didn’t bother putting her shoes on, instead she tied the laces together and hung them around her neck, stuffing a sock in each. She left the bathroom, not caring if anyone saw her. If they had, they didn’t stop her. Her hair loosened as she walked, falling down over her shoulders in long tangled chunks. She made her way down to the Ancient Runes classroom, her bare feet slapping against the cold stone floors of the castle.

She entered quietly, ignoring the other students and sitting down on one of the red cushions near the front of the room, but far away from any of the other students. She picked up the small pouch, shifting it from hand to hand. She opened it and dumped it out on the floor. They looked like Scrabble pieces, but they had strange symbols on the rather than the normal alphabet. After reading the small piece of paper she flipped all the tiles right-side up, then slid them into the correct order, pushing the unused tiles back to the edge of the cushion.

She ignored the last bit of the note, she didn’t want a partner and she hoped there would be an odd number of students in the class so she could work by herself. She’d always disliked group work, and it had been obvious from a young age that Tori did not play well the others…unless she was in charge of course.

[Mihail Lazarus]

It was the last period of the day and the heat made Mihail feel extremely warm and relaxed. He couldn't wait to strip out of his school robes and into a band tee and a pair of denim shorts he made out of an old pair of blue jeans. Despite that, however, he was excited to be attending Ancient Runes. Like Divination, it was one of the more mysterious topics that intrigued him, and so he was headed into class with a good feeling that became an even better feeling once he entered the sheer atmosphere of the place.

Each class was different in some ways or more, and as Divination had its own feel, Ancient Runes definitely had a new feel to it with the new professor employed. It was quite dark, lit only by the candles scattered around the room, and it was quite obvious that they weren't going to be using chairs today, which carved a smile into his lips as he lowered onto a cushion next to Tori, who he had recognized immediately.

"Didn't think I'd see you in class," he commented, dropping his things and pushing them aside as he reached down and opened the pouch before him. Round, wooden pieces rested inside, carved with the ancient text that made him tingle with anticipation. He had read a few things about runes and couldn't wait to get into the meat of things.

Casually, he turned over the pouch and emptied its contents, sifting through the pieces to find the ones he recognized to find the ones he had used for his name a few times in practice before this class.



Reading after the rest of the instructions, he turned to Tori to ask, "Do you want to be partners?"

[Professor Calista Rue]

A chime resounded in the air clear and pure, chased by silence and followed by the slightly musical sound of beads, gems, and precious metals as soft and fluid foot steps seemed to emerge from the darkest corner of the room until the arguably provocatively yet suitably dressed woman was bathed in the soft candle light, brown eyes like black coal in the low light. Unsurprisingly, one would notice the tattoo of blossoms etched along the side of her abdomen as peddles wilted and fell in light of the season. It seemed as if she would be a stern and rigid new professor by the sharp gaze cast to each present face, but the smirk that slowly curled one end of her lips reflected untold secrets they were sure to learn as this school year would go along.

"Well, well, look at the little birdies in my coop." She slowly strolled among the cushions on bare feet, peering down at each of the arranged oak slabs of runic script. Slender fingers reached down in a casual brush through a Slytherin boy's hair as she was to comment, "Interesting choice of a partner, Vincent. I see you and Samantha are forming bonds stretching over miles of differences...Then again, its not a surprising choice after all..." She seemed thoughtful before ruffling his hair, "We'll see how things turn out by the end of class."

She approached the Hufflepuff slowly, gazing down at his runes, then into his eyes. She grinned at him, and as kind a sentiment it may seemed, it also held a concerning dark nature as if her thoughts weren't a place you would want to be topic of. She softly chucked the boy's chin as that grin grew sharp. "Nice meeting you, Mukhtar."

Moving on, she approached another Slytherin, a girl who exuded a care none aura. Calista circled her thoughtfully before reaching down to pluck the last rune from her name. "Victoria." The name was said only for the sake of identification as she glided off to the next student, another Ravenclaw. She looked down at his runes and frowned, then looked back up at him for a long moment before releasing a sigh.

"Mihail...damn, kid." She didn't press the matter and decided subtle signs weren't red flags and that more information would be gathered and while it wasn't her place, she would simply guide him to his answers when the questions would arise, just as she would with every student who found their way to her class.

Patting his head, she went to the purple cushion and sat down, legs crossed in the renown 'Indian Style' as she passed Victoria's rune from one hand to the other, looking at Vincent.

"Hey, Red," and suddenly, names meant next to nothing. "I want you to go and stand outside the door shouting 'Five Minutes Til Ancient Runes. Miss Ivy has a hang over,' kay? Make sure its nice and loud for the hard of hearing. When there is only two minutes left, tag on the end of that, 'If you're late, you're going on her list'. Thanks, kiddo."

She then turned to the rest of the available students, "Anyone who comes into the class at this point you are to boo for arriving after I have with a hangover and two hours of sleep."

Blinking slowly Victoria took a deep breath. Of course Mihail was in this class...of course. She turned slightly to look at him, and her spirits lifted slightly. She may have told herself she was unhappy to see the youngest Lazarus child, but she could never be upset to see Miha. That fact upset her. Her existence was based upon solitude, but somehow Mihail had wormed his way under all of her defenses, even more so than his siblings. She was tired, but Mihail helped pump some life in to her...for the moment anyways.

"Can't ditch every class Miha."She said cooly, changing her positioning on the cushion slightly so she could look at him without twisting her neck so painfully. She watched as he emptied his bag of tiles onto the floor and arranged them so they spelled out his name. He turned back to her and asked her the question she knew he would, the one she'd dreaded. But before she could respond a bell chimed.

She turned in the direction of the noise and saw a woman, who must've been their professor. She was beautiful, there was no doubt in that, and her eccentric garb only added to it. Something close to envy blossomed inside of Victoria as she watched the woman make her way across the classroom, first stopping next to her half-brother and the horrible head girl, then a Hufflepuff boy she didn't know, until finally she made her way towards Victoria; the bells and beads she wore jingling softly.

Victoria's face shifted back to it's usual stone-cold expression as she watched the professor. She examined her tattoos, and then thought of her own. She clamped her hand down around her left forearm. The woman spoke her name and Victoria tensed slightly, but as soon as the professor walked away she relaxed again, settling back down into her seat. She looked up and watched as the professor took her seat, and finally responded to Mihail. "Of course Miha." She said, turning back to him and grabbing a handful of tiles, laying them down in the correct order.

Looking up as other entered, he gave a cautious nod to each, recognizing them all from other classes. Mukhtar was the only one he knew little about, but he didn't see any reason to change at this moment either. At the moment he was far more interested in the fact the Head Girl was his partner for a class; he had to watch his step. The teacher entered, though he did not hear a crack of appiration nor had he spotted her coming through a doorway. Interesting. He didn't know her, but her attitude was curious, calling them all birdies in a cage. Vin didn't grimace, but he did wonder if she was going to end up being one of those cutesy teachers who made up pet names for everyone.

She read his runes and apparently he had done it right as she said his name and then went on to ruffle his hair. For some reason people did that a lot, mostly because of it's fire-orange color mostly he assumed so he was used to it and hardly surprised. He did give her an odd look as she mentioned who his partner was without ever speaking to Samantha. His eyes grew a tad wider as she spoke about seeing how things would go. Aw crap! Was this one of those seer-type teachers who saw stuff everywhere? Softly to his partner as the woman went to other students he whispered "That was weird..."

Maybe his hair caught her eye though for in a minute when she finished with the walk around she called him Red. Annoyed, he listened and then stood saying "It's more orange, but all right," and went outside. Hangover huh? He stepped across the hall, turned to face the door itself (still a bit miffed about the naming thing; after all, did his hair look like a normal kids' hair?), and began shouting rather loudly in the direction of the classroom door. "FIVE MINUTES TILL ANCIENT RUNES! MS IVY HAS A HANGOVER, 'KAY?!"

Then he looked at his watch.

Every minute on the top hand he yelled it again a little louder then last time, winking at the few who gave him curious looks and making motions that it was her fault, pointing at the door. When it got to the last two he added, as requested cause he was obeying the letter of the law, "TWO MINUTES TILL ANCIENT RUNES! MS IVY HAS A HANGOVER, 'KAY?! IF YOU'RE LATE YOU ARE GOING ON HER LIST" adding in a much quieter voice not heard in the classroom "Horror of horrors, you don't want that now, my little birdies."

When the last call had been made he walked in back to his seat smiling innocently and saluted the teacher saying "Orange Zest reporting, Ma'am, all students deaf and amused." Sitting back in his place he gave a glance to Samantha with a wink and then turned back to the teacher, apparently a willing and ready student.

"You really shouldn't do that!" Valkyrie squealed, trying to catch the ornate vase that floated mockingly above her head. Two Slytherin first years stood at the bottom of the staircase showing off the new skills they had learn in charms class. Val wouldn't have even noticed their mischivous floating if the vase hadn't hit her in the head. She had a feeling they'd done it intentionally due to their snickering, either way their poor behavior would not be allowed any longer.

She sighed loudly, turning around quickly and pulling out her wand. "PETRIFICUS TOTALUS!"She shrieked, pointing her wand at the boy who was casting the spell, who immediately dropped to the groud, stiff as a board. She caught the vase and set it down back on it's pedestal then glared down at the Slytherin who was still standing. She smiled sweetly at the girl, who's obnoxious grin had disappeared only to be replaced by a look of terror.

Val pressed the tip of her wand against the open palm of her left hand, and wrapped her thin white fingers around the smooth brown wood. "Now then," She said, just as sweetly as ever, with only a tiny glint of insanity in her eyes, "Please refrain from floating the decor, I wouldn't want to deduct any points from your house...you should probably take your friend to the Hospital Wingm, he seems to have hit the ground rather hard." With that she spun back around and continued up the staircase, which was beginning to shift.

She swore loudly, jumping from the edge of Staircase to the doorway leading to the fifth floor landing. She barely made it, scrambling wildly to pull herself up onto the small ledge, and probably flashing the vast majority of the students below. She almost fell again as she stood, her thin heels sliding dangerously on tiled ledge. She steadied herself on the door and threw it open, hearing a loud voice shouting exactly what she'd dreaded to hear echoing down the hallway.

She ran to the classroom as fast as she could, making it to the door just as a shut. She took a millisecond to compose herself before entering; straightening her skirt and making sure long loose braids were in order. She burst into the and scurried over to one of the empty cushions, sitting down quickly and not daring to make eye contact with the woman who sat at the front of the classroom.

Noticing the small pouch, she dumped it out, sifting through the pieces until she found the directions. Quickly and efficiently she spelled out her name, pushing the rest of the tiles away so it was easy to see and read.

Once she'd finished the first part of what she assumed was that day's warm up lesson, she looked around, hoping to catch the eye of someone she knew that she could partner up with.
