THE SOUND OF ROLLIN' DICE TO ME
is music in the air, although I don't play fair,
IT'S MUCH MORE FUN WITH LIVES ON THE LINE

There were few people at Hogwarts out where she was at this hour, but she preferred being out of sight of the guys who were watching her form in the hallways anyway. Somehow they always thought they were noticed; really? This her spot for the day was up on the astronomy tower, an area usually ignored by most people with free time which worked very well for her. Half her dorm was off contemplating outfits for the yet unannounced yule ball which would have made her exasperated to hang around in the first place! No, here she could be herself (within reason; she had felt a need for purple in her life today) and ignore all that so first off she was dressed sensibly instead of like some trollop and secondly, she had bird time.
Yako, her red fan parrot, often needed outside time while the weather was still decent and this might be one of the last "cool" days he could stand till winter was over. Accordingly, she was watching him exercise his wings, darting from the nearby forest trees to the tower and back, glad for the stretch. He was a stubborn bird and often ill tempered in the winter which was quite understandable when you remembered he was from the Brazilian jungles. Clicking her tongue a particular way he darted back to the tower and tilted his head at her to see what she wanted. making a tossing motion, the bird clearly grew excited and flashed his fan to make her do it. She laughed and tossed the apricot up into the air and the bird shot across the tower top to snatch it and land on the opposite side, eagerly digging into his treat.
It was a cloudy day actually and Gene was glad she had brought up her sleeves for that reason. A glance at the sky, seeing it was not growing darker, and she looked back down into her book of which she had only managed a page so far. Grinning at the silly bird as he chirped three times at her (his imitation of kisses sounds which was actually pretty close sounding) and she said laughingly "Thank you Yako! Yako kisses are the best!" 'Goofy bird' she thought, 'as if I would forget to feed you and it's been so long since you ate twenty minutes ago...' A glance back at her page while he snacked and she managed another three paragraphs before she heard the fluttering sound of his approach and did not flinch as he landed on the pad on her shoulder she wore when she took him outside. Instead, she pretended to ignore him as she knew it would get a reaction and he surprised her by not squawking in her ear and nibbling on it softly instead with affection.
A rare expression for her, she showed a pleased surprise of her own delight as she tilted her head farther saying "Awww, Yako, you tease you..." It was clear she was touched by her pet's attention and reached up rubbing his feathery head in appreciation, scratching him under the back of his head feathers. It was cute, really, something she rarely let anyone see as it embarrassed her to seem weak, but it was also charming in a way to see the tough girl become what she was to some degree, a young woman instead of a tomboy. As he stopped nibbling she stop scratching and he took off for another forage into the trees and she felt a tad silly for a moment after he left, being played by her own bird.
