The beginning of this story is a little dark.
She would never recall the darkness she, and her brother had been subjected to as children, as their children. Kept locked inside the dark family complex from the moment she had been born into the world, up until that one fateful night four years later when she would be saved from the darkness . The darkness of the family complex, the darkness that had long ago consumed the hearts of her family. The darkness would never again touch her again, For it would be on the night when the two were led into the room that should have casted them into eternal darkness, that they would instead be saved. After that night, the darkness would never touch them again.
There was a disgusting scent that filled the air as she and her brother were brought into that room. The scent that was caused by the burning of the ceremonial incense that was there to cover the metallic scent of blood that had gathered, the scent had become a part of the room after all of the years of repeating the sacred ceremony, the ceremony that would make their next head of the family someone to be feared, someone who would bring their family name out of the thick smoke, the misleading illusion that had covered their family name and would bring them the glory and honor that they knew they deserved.
The fear that she felt that day and night would confuse her. Though she was scared beyond all belief, she would never know the exact reason why she was so scared. She would never know why she and her brother were stripped of their normal clothing, and dressed in nothing but strange white robes and why they were blindfolded, and led intoa room before they were forced into a corner of the room, tied down and restrained so they could not escape. There was the sharpening of tools, the sharpening of metal before all went silent.
That was when the pain started. The painful and burning sensation of hot, sharp metal ripping various pieces of their clothing and grazing their previously unmarked flesh leaving scars behind that two twins would forever be questioned about despite their inability to answer the questions that they were asked. Cruel laughter and terrified cries filled the air, and the blindfolds that were once tied around their eyes slowly slipped off due to their struggling.
The first thing that came to the girl's terrified gaze was a bright crimson red that was leaking from the wounds that had been inflicted on both her brother and herself. The sharp, metallic scent of blood cut through the artificial scent of the incense creating a nauseating mixture. She could hear her brother's terrified cries grow even worse at smelling the horrible smell, and her tiny heart began to ache.Cruel laughter filled the air, laughing for a few moments before suddenly stopping. Terrified shouts, and screams filled the air exclaiming their terror. There was the sound of spells being shouted, the sound of people hitting the ground. This went on for what seemed like hours, (but in reality was probably only a few moments) and soon the entire room was filled with only the sound of her brother's cries.
After a moment of only hearing her brother's cries, she heard voices talking. Some were laughing, and some were cheering. Some belonged to men, and some belonged to women.
"I can't believe how easy it was to kill all of 'em!"
"Well look at how stupid they were! All gathered in one place like that!"
" Aye, They were like bugs ready to be squished."
" Should we see if there are any survivors?"
She could feel her tiny heart pounding in her chest as she heard footsteps approaching the room that she and her brother were currently tied down in. They were going to die, and there was nothing she could do to save either of them. Her eyes closed, and tears ran down her cheeks, all hope lost when the voices spoke again this time directly above her.
"What sick b******* those people were. Can't believe they'd do this to a couple of kids."
" I agree.It's a shame,they're a couple of really pretty kids too. I almost don't want to kill 'em"
" We can't leave them alive! They can be the ones that end up landing us in Azkaban!"
" They're mostly dead anyways!"
She heard the wizard draw out his wand, and didn't need to glance up at him to know that the man had his wand pointed at her.
" Avada Ked-"
The man's spell was stopped, and a loud slap filled the air immediately silencing him. She heard footsteps walking towards her, and shut her eyes tightly waiting for pain, any sort of pain to hit her. To her surprise not only was she not hurt, she was actually untied from her prision, and cradled as if she were some sort of precious doll. Her eyes immediately moved over to her twin in worry, only to relax when she saw someone doing the same thing to her brother. A sharp feminine voice immediately interrupted the silence.
" These children are not to be harmed."
" B-Bu-"
" No buts.Show some compassion for once in your life"
" What do we do with this place?"
" Burn it to the ground.Show no mercy"
It was then that she and her brother were carried out of the house, off of the property to a group of old witches that proceeded to fix their wounds, and coo over them. However, the children paid no attention to them. They merely linked hands with each other, and watched in silence as their home was set on fire.
The flames were beautiful in a very terrifying way. The beautiful oranges, and yellows that lived in the flames seemed to dance a very dangerous, and alluring dance. Beckoning, and taunting the children to come closer if they dared. Mocking them, forcing them to watch as the only home that they had ever known was burned down to the very ground. It was strangely beautiful and terrifying all at the same time.
When the fire had become less fascinating to watch, the girl dared a glance up at the woman that had saved her. She had very dark, very long and wavy hair. Her skin was very slightly tanned, and she had the sharpest, prettiest eyes that she had ever seen. She was the picture definition of the word beauty, at least that was how it was in the girl's eyes. Sensing that she was being stared at, the woman looked down at the little girl. They stared at each other for a while, before the woman kneeled down so that she was at her level.
" I'm sorry that you've had to go through so much pain, at such a young age."
She received a gentle pat on the head, a gentle hand brushing tear stained hair out of her face and behind her ear before giving her a very small and sad smile. Sympathy had laced her tone as she spoke, making her sharp voice appear softer.
"But do not worry little one. I will not allow this pain to haunt you for the rest of your life. You will forget all that you know, and you will start anew. With a new family, new memories, a new home, and a new name. The only thing that you will remember is your brother, and your love for him"
A wand was pointed at her head, and a quick glance over to her brother revealed that the same thing was happening to him. She and her twin made eye contact with one another, and both gave a simple nod to their opposite, reaching over to each other and linking hands with one another. They closed their eyes, and each felt the tip of a wand press against their forehead. A single word was whispered, and the world seemed to flash white for an instant, before everything faded to black.
" Obliviate.."
It would be a few hours later that a couple would stumble across two children that were holding each other, nearly frozen to death as they walked through the snow. Their clothing was tattered, and stained with a surprising amount of blood. Neither of the children could recall anything about their lives when asked. They did not know where they lived, or if they even had a home. They did not know if they had parents. They did not even know if they had names or not*. The only thing that they did know is that they were brother and sister, and that they were hungry and cold. Not having the heart to leave them out there, the couple took them back to where they staying to feed and clean them.
They were given some old t-shirts, and were taken to a warm bed. After months, and months of searching for their parents, and finding no one, the twins were adopted by the new family. The woman giving the girl the name Luna, and the man giving the boy the name Artemis in tribute to the moon that was shining down on them the night that the adults found them in the snow.
It was the very beginning of what would be known as their new life.
(* Luna, and Artemis did not actually have names before they were adopted by their new parents. They did not remember their names, because they were never given any to begin with.)
