It was the last period of the day beyond those who signed up for Astronomy and would later meet up at the top of the Astronomy tower. The afternoon sun had warmed the castle stone, though the bitter autumn air threatened to cool it. This didn't exactly apply to the Ancient Runes classroom however, despite the fact that it resides on the fifth floor of Ravenclaw Tower, where the stone and air was warm and inviting.
The first thing one would find upon walking into the classroom is the music of a chimes softly touching the air as the doors swing, the low light that is shown wavers only slightly from the many candles that scattered about the room on any surface available. Candles were needed for large, heavy, black, velvet curtains were pulled over the large windows, blocking out the hazy afternoon sun.
The stone walls were adorn with pictures of Norse gods and runic literature. Old Anglo-Saxon kings peered down from their places on the walls at the patrons of the room, remembering faces. The tables were pushed back along the far wall, wooden chairs stacked neatly at their sides to make room for the display of deep royal purple velvet cushion seated at the center of the room.
Odd furniture that looked to belong to any eastern and northern European country decorated the room space, reminding one of the odd pieces that adorn Miss Ivy's hair. Some of these items held magical properties while most were just for aesthetic and decorative purposes.
Upon the royal purple cushion sat the professor quietly in padmasana (lotus pose), eyes closed and hands rested on each thigh. Practicing pranayama, she was in a state of low breathing, completely relaxed to the point where it wasn't quite clear if she was even awake! The air was still, all was quiet as her abdomen slowly extended and retracted with every breath.
"You, there," she spoke to the first person to arrive. She did not move nor open her eyes, but she came from her meditation to give her orders, "In there corner is a stack of red cushions. Please move them all to form an arch before me. A half circle, if you will." With that, her lips were arrested in silence, pranayama continued. She waited. Class would begin soon.
